A Positive Approach at College

I work for a municipal engineering firm and I love the fact that they are involved with a college co-op program that allows students to gain hands on experience in the field of engineering. This also allows the students to figure out if this is truly the field they are interested in. Most of the students upon graduation usually apply back to the firm for a full time position. It's a win win for both the firm and the students. The students have already gained experience and are familiar with the firm and the firm knows the work ethics of the students.

Attending college is great, but being in a classroom all day just doesn't give the student the feeling of actually participating and working in the field of choice.

Kettering University has been ranked number one by US News and World Report for being America's best colleges. They offer engineering co-op programs to their students also. In the student's freshman year, Kettering alternates the student between school and their placement job every three months. This experience gained is extremely helpful with their continued studies.

A benefit that students enjoy are the earnings. They receive a weekly salary in the professional field they are interested in. Most students are bogged down all day with classes, then work at night for the extra money needed. This leaves no time for homework or studying. I think this is disruptive to the students. Students on co-op can work during the day, earn their salary and have their nights free to study.

I think it's great there are colleges out there that realize the importance of classroom studies combined with workplace experience that gives the ultimate learning experience for the students. This also allows the students to gain confidence, self-esteem and motivation.

Students interested in industrial engineering,Manufacturing or Mechanical engineering should truly learn more about the Kettering program.

A Hospital Visit...

I usually don't like to let so much time go by in between posting, but I have been sick again since the weekend.

I briefly mentioned in a prior post that I was feeling ill. I did have a few days where I felt better, but... Having first thought it was a stomach bug and then thinking it was stress related, I finally had to go to the hospital.

After testing, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. The preparation for the CAT scan (contrast & dyes) has caused a reaction and now my symptoms are much worse, but hopefully this will subside within a day.

The positive to this is that I am so familiar with this disease I know what to do to help myself. My son also has Crohn's and I have taken care of him during his flare ups. Diet is key and I am working on that so I can snap myself into remission and be pain and symptom free.

Bear with me, I'll be posting regular again real soon.

Angelbaby, thank you for always thinking of me and including me in your link love and little tagging games. It is so very appreciated.

Angelbaby's newest:

Anger is only one letter short of danger

If he betrays you twice, it is your fault.

ICE Saves Lives

Some of you may already be aware of this, but for those who are not, it's a good piece of information.

According to icesticker.com there are 215 million cell phones users in the United States and that number continues to rise. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2006 that 1,600,000 emergency room patients could not provide contact information because they were incapacitated.

Imagine how many younger children and teens carry cell phones, but do not have identification on them.

The ICE campaign actually started in the UK and then spread to the US informing individuals how important it is to have emergency contact information in your cell phone. Putting the word ICE into you contact list with the person you would want contacted in case of emergency. Since this is global, emergency workers and hospitals are now aware and can easily reach someone in case of an emergency situation.

Now taking this campaign one step further, an ICE sticker is now available. This sticker can be attached to the back of your phone, making it much easier to find emergency information. This saves valuable time of someone trying to figure out where your ICE number is within your phone or if you even have it .

Get involved and make sure you acquire this ICE sticker at icesticker.com At the very least, enter your emergency contact information in your phone right now.

Smart Tips

Save Money

Did the cold weather do damage to your hands? I am addicted to hand cream, but sometimes my hands still feel dry or chapped. According to Scientists at Duke University in North Carolina, using a small dollop of Crisco shortening rubbed into your hands thoroughly will provide 4 times the moisture your skin needs. Crisco provides a super strong barrier that traps moisture.

Feeling Stressed?

Black tea to the rescue! When drinking black tea, your levels of the stress hormone cortisol drops by 47 percent in under one hour.

Unleash Hidden Stress

When you feel that you need to recharge to carry on, here’s a little exercise that will unblock your trapped energy.

Rest the fingertips of your right hand on your belly button and the fingertips of your left hand on the center of your forehead. Apply light pressure and hold for 30 seconds. Your main meridian or energy source, runs straight up the front of your body. Manipulating these acupressure points will recharge you.

The Scent Makes You Seem 6 Years Younger

According to a study at Chicago’s Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, women who wore the scent of pink grapefruit were assumed to be 6 years younger than they actually are. This scent is said to recapture a youthful feeling.

Today Is The Day...

Have you ever said to yourself…Today is the day I will... (fill in the blank) ? You feel energized and ready to tackle the project or even that exercise program you have been putting off. You are motivated, thinking positive and feelling good. You are in a great mood, feeling passion about what's ahead and the choices you are making.

We are in control of our own lives. The sooner we believe and accept that, the better off we will be. We women are so busy nurturing, motivating and taking care of others, that we sometimes lose ourselves in the process. Then one day you wake up and say...this is the day... I AM going to accomplish what I have been putting off. I am going to do something for ME.

But, something happens along the way…after a few days (for some, maybe longer), we lose our motivation. We fade back into the old routine and eventually stop with the project(s) we started.

Enthusiasm is what gets us started and motivation will help us to achieve our goals. In the beginning we are willing to pursue our goal, but then our life, family, work may make demands that keep us from continuing. Throw in not feeling good or tired, new responsibilities and for sure we won't feel the same enthusiasm as we did at the start.

How can we rekindle the spark that we felt on the day we said… Today is the day?

Have a very clear picture of what we want to obtain or where we want to be in say 3, 6 months. Evaluate your progress. Stick to a routine, so progress becomes automatic. If it's the routine that bores you, change it up, but make sure you give yourself X amount of time dedicated to your goal.

If you allow your motivation to dwindle then it wasn't true motivation to begin with right? Just a temporary feeling. So you need to really believe in what you want to achieve. Remember the rewards or benefits you will reap when you reach your goal. Enjoy what you are doing, get excited

If you have a setback, don't worry...get back up in the saddle and start again. Don't allow negative feelings or thoughts keep you from feeling that motivation again. Motivation may come and go, but it will return. Don't give up.

For "CHICKS" Only

I just stumbled on the best site and I wanted to share it with you. It's such a fantastic idea and I am sure you women will agree.

How many of you have taken a Chick vacation? One where you can just be yourself, without the men in your lives? A trip for total female bonding: to share your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and life's problems. A trip where you receive the nourishing support one needs from a girlfriend. Maybe even a trip to catch up with friends who you haven't seen in awhile.

Let's face it...men have been taking male bonding trips...those fishing trips, hunting trips and even the baseball tournament outings. Now it's OUR turn to not feel guilty to get away and experience a trip with the girls. I know I feel a calming affect when I am with the girls for a night or even when I have gotten away to have some fun. It's a lasting affect and one I believe we all need.

Don't have a girlfriend who is able to get away with you? At Chickable...life's a chick trip...you can locate other women who share your interests and passions for a group getaway. This trip could be for a night, a weekend or an extended vacation. Meet new friends and connect with other women. Experience the 'feel good' benefits of getting away with your friends. Alone time so to speak from your significant other, husband, children, the stress of everyday life.

Taking a chick trip is a chance to take time for ourselves that we often don't do. To love ourselves...to rejuvenate.

Chickable is also promoting a chance to win a free chick trip. Visit Chickable.com to sign up for free.

Your thoughts? Have you ever taken a chick trip? What did you like best about getting away with the girls?

Happy St. Patrick's Day !

Good luck to everyone! And may all your dreams come true!!

Defibrillator Lead Recall

If you have a family member or know someone who has a implanted defibrillator, you should read this post.

According to Wikipedia, Defibrillation is the definitive treatment for the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Defibrillation consists of delivering a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the affected heart with a device called a defibrillator. Defibrillators can be external, transvenous, or implanted, depending on the type of device used.

The invention of implantable units are invaluable to some regular sufferers of heart problems, although they are generally only given to those people who have already had a cardiac episode. The system is implanted near the shoulder with one or more leads attached to the heart.

Medtronic Inc has voluntarily removed the Sprint Fidelis defective defibrillator leads
from the market. Below are the models that may be at risk of lead fracture.

Sprint Fidelis 6930
Sprint Fidelis 6931
Sprint Fidelis 6948
Sprint Fidelis 6949

The FDA has reported that some deaths and other serious injuries have occurred after these leads have fractured. Approximately 268,000 patients in the United States have been implanted with the Fidelis lead, including patients with defibrillators made by manufacturers other than Medtronic, such as Guidant, Boston Scientific and St. Jude.

Feeling the Affect of the Time Change

Is it just me or is anyone else feeling the affect of the time change? Ever since we changed to day light savings time, I'm feeling tired and unproductive. I know it will just take a few more days to adjust, but in the mean time, I decided to slow down until I've become accustom to the change. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the additional sunlight. This will eventually give me more energy and I am so ready for the warm weather!

Sometimes I forget I'm not wonder woman. ha...you know, I think I can do it all without feeling any affects. Well I guess at times it does catch up with me. Lately the mornings are the hardest. It still feels like I'm getting up an hour earlier.

Some ways to take a break and slow down: These have rejuvenated me

If it's possible, take a solitary break from everyone around you. Enjoy your own company. Do something you enjoy by yourself.

Take a break from your usual routine. One day decide to take a different route to work. Break your daily habits for a day. Enjoy the change of scenery.

Take a break for 10 -20 minutes.Close your eyes, sit and relax. Enjoy the peace.
Let your thoughts flow. Do some day dreaming. Focus on your breathing.

A Fallen Solider

The affect of the war has come close to home. My mom’s friend of almost 60 years, lost her 23 yr old grandson last week in a terrorist bombing in Afghanistan. Being at the wake last night was very emotional. The 6 Army soldiers that traveled with Steve, guard him 24 hours. The emotions on their faces, in their eyes were evident. The Governor of New Jersey greeted the attendees with words of attempted comfort.

Steve leaves behind not only family and friends, but a young wife and a 14 month old daughter. His daughter will never actually know her father. Steve was scheduled to return home next month.

As I proceeded to express my sympathy to my mom’s friend (who I know rather well), her daughter and family and to Steve’s wife, I couldn’t help but to feel angry…anger directed toward the war and those involved. Then came disbelief and sadness.

I watched the soldiers. I just couldn’t take my eyes from them. Two of the soldiers that took the trip, looked liked babies…so young… innocent to so many other things in life, yet seeing so much in their brief years. How sad to think that their minds will be forever affected. By what they must do, what they have seen…as with anyone associated in war. Here these two young men are not legally old enough to buy cigarettes or alcohol. Barely past the age to register to vote… driving experience of a very short time… Yet they are trained, handed a weapon and taught to kill to defend us. I can’t fathom that thought.

I made eye contact with one solider. We spoke silently. As he viewed the family pictures, scanned the room of family and friends, you could almost see his mind going in so many directions. As he turned with misty eyes, I extended my hand. We shook hands and to my surprise...he said "thank you"

Can you imagine? HE thanked me.

Before I left the funeral home last night, I shook hands with each soldier, with the exception of the soldier guarding the casket.

Thanking them for what they are going through for each one of us was the least I can do...

For each one who is affected by this war...who may have a loved one away from home, for each one who has lost a loved one...I am so very sorry you have to go through this experience.

Celebrating International Women's Day

Great words and thoughts
By Peggy Porter
From Brief to Thong
www.frombrieftothong.com

March 8th is International Women's Day. For many women this day will go unnoticed, however, my hope is that for all of you reading this, March 8th will become more than just another ordinary day.

Let's commit to making International Women's Day a day that...celebrates the sameness yet uniqueness in every one of us, celebrates the ordinary, yet extraordinary woman contributing daily to her family, workplace and community
celebrates the strong, resilient, yet sensitive nature each one of us possess.
Make this day one of recognition.

Let's recognize our individual accomplishments no matter how small we think they may be. Let's recognize the amazing success of the women in our own community, whether they are career women, business owners, mothers or volunteers. Each one deserves to be honored for the individual way they touch our society.

In celebration of this occasion, take the time to nurture yourself. Health and vitality is a woman's greatest asset. We are our best when we feel our best so practice an act of self care today. Surrender any guilt and do something you love. If you need a reason, do it just because.

Let this day be a day of inspiration and possibilities.

What are you inspired to do? What goals and dreams do you have? In today's society, we are blessed with unlimited opportunities so there are no limits to what we can accomplish. The only limits are self imposed so ask yourself...what would I do if I knew I couldn't fail? Let your desires inspire you to take action. If fear sneaks in, remind yourself of the many amazing dreams that women before us have fulfilled.

Make this not only a day of personal inspiration, but ask yourself- who can I be a role model for - your child, a friend, a co-worker? We all can BE a mentor and we all NEED a mentor-someone who can aspire in us our very best. So, let us be mentors in our communities, in our workplaces and most of all, in our relationships. Let's bring out the best in each other.

As we take part in our own celebration of International Women's Day, may we also make this a day of hope, reflection and prayer. May we remember the many countries whose women do not have the same opportunities or place in society that we are so blessed to have.

Let's make this a celebration where we build each other up, where we support, not judge , where we praise, not criticize and most of all, where we appreciate.

Appreciate the women in your life, the opportunities that lie before you, the people who love and support you, the community that offers such beauty and freedom but most of all, appreciate YOU. You are the reason this day was created. Cheers to you!

Confused by Insurance Options?

When it comes to insurance, there are so many options. You can insure just about anything these days. People often think that it's better to be safe than sorry, but sometimes end up spending more money than they should on coverage they don't really need. If you own a business, there are options for Business Insurance as well.

You should cover the big risks in your life. Those being your life, your health, your home and your car if you have one.

You can save money on insurance. Shopping around for the best deal is one good way. Companies also give discounts to customers who buy more than one type of coverage from them. Raising your deductible will lower your insurance monthly payment. You should make sure that you have coverage that's both comprehensive and covers catastrophic events that would cause hardship, such as the death of a spouse.

According to Robert Hunter, director of insurance for the Consumer Federation of America, there are common types of insurance that he and other experts believe people should avoid:

Life insurance for children- Losing a child, may be the hardest and toughest experience a parent can go through, but the experience does not lead to economic hardship. I would think you do not rely on your children to provide income for your survival.

Cancer insurance- This policy does cover one risk, but it is better to just have good insurance. Death comes in various ways...why pay for protection just for cancer?

Accidental death- Again, this is covering a risk, but having a good policy will be adequate. Unless, you are in a dangerous profession.

Travel insurance- This coverage would only be useful if you are aware of a serious illness or if you would not be able to reschedule.

Whole life insurance- Term insurance provides an investment option that might be a better choice. If you have a spouse working from home, make sure they are also covered due to their death causing a financial hardship.

Insurance against inconveniences- Are they really worth paying monthly for? Would it be the end of the world? Probably not...

Identity theft-Reguarly check your credit report, which can be done for free. Take precautionary steps to avoid someone being able to access your personal information.

Insuring your clunker- It doesn't make sense to have full insurance coverage on an old car unless of course it is a classic and worth a lot of money. If your old car gets totaled in an accident, you will only receive the value regardless. Would your monthly payments over the years exceed the value?

Extended warranties- Quality purchases should not fail while under warranty

Payment protection insurance- You pay a lot of money each month for this protection. This coverage pays your credit card or mortgage payments in case of illness or job loss, but what you have already and will continue to pay be more than having made sure you had just saved enough for a 'rainy day'?

If you own one of the above policies, you may want to reconsider. Is this policy truly necessary in protecting you from a financial hardship? If it isn't, why throw your hard earned money toward a monthly expense?

Taking a Chance...

As I mentioned the other day, I hadn’t been feeling up to par. It seems a lot of people are complaining of not feeling well. Global in fact… It seems more people get sick around the change of season. Thanks for all the well wishes.

I believe my stomach bug was accompanied by being worn down by stress. Work drama that I was dealing with on a day to day basis, plus other life situations thrown my way just made me feel tired. I felt like a rock at the edge of the beach. Wave after wave pounding upon me. My choices were to keep taking it or do something about it. Complaining about it or feeling the stress of the situations was not helping, nor would that change anything, so I had to do something different. My brain was yelling....STOP…ENOUGH already…

We truly are in control of our life and what is happening around us. I took the bull by the horns and decided to do something. I was beginning to feel I was not centered….everything around me was off balance. I needed to regroup, get back in control.

I Got a plan together, made the to –do list and started picking away at those things that needed to be changed….one by one. My work related problem was the toughest actually for it included other people causing the issue, but reflected on me. I took a deep breath, swallowed some pride, threw out the notion of who was right and who was wrong, realized what was best for the situation and I made phone calls to the parties involved.

I wasn't sure how this would work, it could have back fired, but at this point I hadn't anything to lose but more to gain, so I took a chance.

I Suggested my plan and I was successful in having them see a new point of view. Only after 2 days back into work, you can feel the difference. The air is lighter, the stress lifted…ahhhhh…much better

I knew something had to be done. Management wasn't ‘managing’ so someone had to grow some gonads and do something. I’m glad I did

My other issues are currently being worked on and I am positive they will work out for the best. Sometimes it takes some thought and looking at a different point of view to see a solution. If what you are doing is not working, realize a change in the way you are handling a situation can bring about a positive result. Sometimes the solution rests with YOU even if someone else is causing a problem.

Taking a chance, asking a higher spiritual guide for help or digging deep within yourself will provide the answers you need.
